What we hear less about, however, is how to care for ageing hair and how to keep it healthy and glossy. After all, who wants to invest heavily in anti-ageing skincare only to be betrayed by their hair?

Hair can easily become dull and lacklustre. A combination of environmental pollutants and subjecting the hair to relentless torture in the form of blow-drying, curling, straightening and backcombing to name but a few, can leave the hair looking less than its best. Add in the natural thinning and greying of the hair that is inevitable with advancing age, and if we’re not careful we’ll soon be displaying brittle, dry hair, reminiscent of an 80 year-old lady.

Fortunately, there are several measures we can take to preserve our crowing glories.

Tip 1

Firstly, avoid exposing the hair to sunlight. UV rays will strip hair of moisture and shine as well as pigment. Cover your hair with a hat if you’re to spend a prolonged time in the sun, or at the very least use a protectant spray. Sun care sprays with SPF area widely available – they will protect both hair and scalp from sun damage. Invest in a suncare spray for hair such as Boots Soltan Transparent Suncare spray with SPF30 or Kerastese Soleil Aqua Seal that protects the hair from the sun, wind, salt and chlorine.

Tip 2

It’s sensible to limit the use of professional – grade heat styling tools as they can wreak havoc with the condition of the hair. Three times a week should be an absolute maximum, and be sure to use a heat-protectant spray prior to use.

Tip 3

Nutrition is also important – a high protein, low fat and low carb diet helps with hair growth, and taking a Vitamin B supplement will be beneficial also.

Tip 4

A flattering and easy to maintain cut can also belies age, as does a subtle colour that adds gloss and shine. A harsh cut or colour is less likely to flatter an ageing face so it’s often best to ask your hairdresser’s advice about which style and colour will suit. Hair colours one or two shades lighter than the base colour will often accentuate skin tone.

Tip 5

If you’ve already incurred considerable damage to your hair, then there’s plenty that can be done to repair it. Lustre can be restored by shampooing and conditioning with products that contain dimethicone – which is a shine enhancer – and also cetyl alcohol, which is a moisturising ingredient.

Anyone who is over 30 will eventually have finer, thinner hair than previously but some women suffer greater hair-loss than others. If you’re suffering from female-pattern hair loss and have thinning, fine locks, rest assured you’re in good company. Fifty per cent of women will suffer from this genetic and hormonal condition at some point. Look for products with Minoxidil in them to address this – Regaine for women is a good example as it is clinically proven to stop hair thinning in 8 out of 10 women.

It’s also important to treat hair with care, avoiding anything that puts a strain on it. That means avoiding chemically processing the hair as much as possible and anything that pulls on it should be used sparingly. That means no tight ponytails, weaves or braids. These can cause breakage but also damage the hair root, rendering it unable to produce more hair and adding to the thinning problem.

Tip 6

Invest in some anti-ageing hair products like Nexxus Youth Renewal Rejuvenating Elixir is an advanced leave-in treatment that rebuilds strength and combats 8 visible signs of ageing hair – volume loss, breakage, less shine, roughness, dryness, brittleness, unruliness and loss of color vibrancy. Pantene Pro V BB creme does similar – protecting the hair from heat and combing damage and preserving the hair’s youthful appearance.
