When I was 9, I was playing in the bathroom and I picked up my dads razor, examined it curiously and then proceeded to shave off half my right eyebrow, because that’s the sort of thing you do when you are 9 right? (well it could have been worse!)
The result meant going to school with a fringe over my eyebrows for a whole fortnight and a very embarrassed looking mother, of course back then I was oblivious to the catastrophe that I had caused and would suffer the consequences of long into adult life. The result was a lifelong wonky right eyebrow that never really grew back properly and approximately 20 years or so of over plucking, waxing and generally trying to eradicate any tell tale signs of my Mediterranean dark hairy origins.
Over the last couple of years the trend of cosmetic tattooing has grown phenomenally, with brows now being such a focal point of beauty in media and within the beauty industry, I was brave enough last year to try HD Brows at Dermaspa in Milton Keynes with eyebrow queen Nilam Patel, the result of this fabulous treatment was perfectly symmetrical groomed brows, it was love at first pluck, and since that time almost more than a year ago I have toyed with the idea of having semi-permamant make up to my unruly brows.
I took my brave leap of faith with renowned cosmetic tattoo artist Cathy Brown, who is based in a beautiful boutique town called Sutton Coldfield in the West Midlands, Cathy has been tattooing for a long time and is an Elite Trainer for the Nouveau Contour Beauty Group, leaders in the field of cosmetic tattooing and founded by Karen Betts.
Cathy is the consummate professional and has been know to turn away more clients than she actually treats “it’s about expectations and matching them as realistically as possible” she chirped, “I would rather lose money than take it from a client and not match their expectations”, I like that philosophy a lot.
With this in mind, I settled comfortably into my treatment, Cathy explained every step of the procedure with meticulous detail, this put me at great ease, I’m the kind of client that needs a running commentary to qualm my nerves.
After briefly filling in the relevant medical forms, and ensuring that my patch test had been done 48 hours prior to the treatment, I proceeded to part one of the treatment which entails Cathy measuring the eyebrows and designing the shape/template, this is actually a painstakingly delicate process which takes time, Cathy spent a considerable amount of time shading, measuring and ensuring that her design template for my brows were what I was looking for, several examinations in the mirror later and we settled on a shape and she got to work.
The actual treatment is a series of pressure points with the needle that is in no way as scary as it sounds. Brush strokes of the hand held device mimic the natural fine hair brush strokes of your eyebrows and are skilfully created by the practitioners steady hand and pigment colours.
Numbing cream ensures that the treatment is constantly comfortable, the process is no more painful that a waxing session and if you should feel the tiniest hint of discomfort you will be topped up with more anaesthetic cream.
I cannot begin to explain to you how utterly amazing it is to have perfectly formed and natural looking brows at the end of the treatment, the power of a good cosmetic tattoo artist and the right degree of skill and competence can totally and dramatically change your face, to me having my eyebrows look so wonderful at the end of this procedure was more uplifting and empowering than any Botox treatment I have ever had.
Since having my eyebrows tattooed by Cathy Brown I have become enamoured with the whole subject and art and have closely worked with the Nouveau Contour Group to help them develop their stance on safety, professionalism and adequate training within the industry.
I truly believe that nobody right now in the industry cares about their clients more than this group of people.
Cathy answers all questions fully, professionally and helpfully, if she turns you away it’s because she has your best interests at heart and there should be more professionals like her in the industry.
I had a top -up after 4 weeks of my initial treatment whereby the brows healed and naturally progressed and settled, You may wish to note that when your eyebrows are first tattooed the colour appears darker and intense but this soon settles down after about a couple of weeks.
I can safely say that this is one aesthetic treatment I shall not be giving up too easily. It’s worth every single penny of investment.
A word of advice, please research your cosmetic tattoo artist carefully, I went to the best and the best is often worth paying a little more for.
