Gold Rush

Are beauty products that contain gold ingredients really worth their weight?

Luxury addicts will love gold beauty aids both for their opulent nature and also for their purported benefits, which include anti-ageing, firming, and rejuvenating properties. However, are they really worth their weight in Gold?

Cleopatra slept in a pure gold face mask to enhance her bewitching beauty, and in ancient Rome, gold was used to treat a variety of skin ailments.

Golden Remedy

Gold was named “Allergan of the Year” in 2001 by the American Contact Dermatitis Association.

  • Gold is very resistant to bacteria and so is often the material of choice for implants that are at risk of infection, such as in the inner ear,’ says Dr Richard Holliday, of the World Gold Council.
  • The use of gold compounds in medicine is called chrysotherapy. Since 1929, when a French doctor discovered its anti-inflammatory properties, gold compounds in drugs have been used to treat rheumatoid arthritis.
  • In the past few decades, gold compounds have also been found to be useful as potential HIV agents and even cancer treatments.

Although there are few scientific studies and data to support its benefits when it comes to beauty, advocates of gold therapies claim it works wonders, but does it?

Beauty products and treatments that contain gold whether in flake, powder, or liquid form can cost quite a bit. Expect to pay about 200 pounds for a plush fancy named face lotion, and as much as a whopping 500 pounds per ounce for certain products such as La Prairie. Although gold has been a popular ingredient in luxury high-end skin care treatments for some time, there has always been a good deal of controversial debate over its true effectiveness.

People in the medical community aren’t big fans of cosmetics companies’ claims about gold, but many of those companies say they’ve conducted studies and trials on their own that suggest some forms of gold can be beneficial for skin firming and rejuvenation.

Colloidal gold and gold nano flakes are both cited as being more effective forms of the precious metal, nanoparticles currently have unregulated status, so many experts cite safety as a concern. However it is clear that gold as an ingredient isn’t going away any time soon,

Using something so precious on your skin is always going to be appealing to beauty lovers.
