Tooth contouring and reshaping
Tooth contouring is the process of shaping the natural teeth to improve their appearance. Tooth reshaping can be used to correct crowded or overlapping teeth, smooth rough edges, or improve the shape of a tooth.
Am I a candidate for Tooth contouring and reshaping?
If you have strong and healthy teeth, but experience any of the above, you may be a suitable candidate for a tooth contouring procedure:
You must have sufficient enamel on your natural teeth to avoid chipping or damage to the tooth after treatment. Those who grind their teeth have deep cracks, chips or decay may not be good candidates for dental contouring.
A full consultation with your cosmetic dentist will determine the best course of treatment for you. If you have several teeth that require cosmetic attention, your dentist may recommend a combination of tooth contouring, veneers or crowns to achieve the smile that you desire.
Your dentist may use computer-imaging software to show you how the tooth contouring procedure is carried out, and how your smile will look once the tooth reshaping treatment is complete.
Dental contouring is relatively pain-free and does not usually require the use of an anaesthetic. The results are immediately obvious and you can return to your normal activities immediately. It is also relatively inexpensive compared to other cosmetic dentistry treatments.
How is Tooth contouring and reshaping done?
When you go to the dentist for your tooth reshaping appointment, your cosmetic dentist will examine your teeth and supporting bone structure, then take x-rays to determine how much pulp is in each tooth.
Your dentist may even out any imperfections in the teeth using a laser or small sanding drill. Then small sections of the enamel are removed to even out the teeth. Abrasive strips are passed between the teeth to even out any spaces. A laminate material is adhered to areas of the natural teeth to create a naturally shaped tooth. Once the tooth reshaping procedure is complete, the teeth are buffed and polished to a shine and your new, even smile is complete.
